THE FOUNDER
Grand Master MyungSu Yu Sung Kim is remembered for his lifetime achievements in the areas of Peace Breathing meditation, Peace Exercise yoga, traditional martial art, and his new educational system for peace. His passing in 1999 was a loss deeply felt by all at The Peace School and by many people throughout the world who respected him and admired his work. Grand Master Kim removed himself from a successful teaching career in his native Korea in the early 1950's to start a new type of educational organization with the goal of making a better person, country and world. This was the forerunner to The Peace School, which he founded in Chicago in 1972 after relocating to the United States.
Grand Master Kim's martial art training began as a boy, while life experiences led him to the practice of Peace Breathing and Exercise. In his early 20's, he was stricken with a number of serious health problems that eventually threatened his very life. In extreme pain and with no hope of recovery, he began to seriously consider suicide until he was suddenly gripped with the idea that he could -- and must -- cure himself. With renewed hope, he researched anatomy and both Western and Oriental medicine, as well as ancient methods of breathing, meditation and exercise. He put these methods into practice until he fully recovered, living a full and active life into his 70's. Through this and other milestones in his life, Grand Master Kim came to realize the deep significance of the mind in improving one's health and life circumstances. Furthermore, he caught a glimpse of the tremendous impact that each person's thoughts have on the entire world.
Grand Master Kim drew from his painful yet enlightening experiences to develop a wonderful new system in line with today's lifestyles. From the original ancient systems of meditation and yoga, he developed the easy-to-practice Peace Breathing and Peace Exercise methods with the sincere wish of bringing peace to the individual and the world even one day sooner.
