ABOUT THE PEACE SCHOOL

The International Association for World Peace, known as The Peace School, is a non-profit, equal opportunity, educational organization headquartered in Chicago since 1972.

The Peace School's mission is to help individuals of all ages practice peace in everyday life by attaining peace in mind, body and spirit, creating the foundation for a broader peace in our families, schools, communities, nations and the world. To nurture individual peace and harmony with all things, The Peace School teaches a unique blend of meditation, exercise and peace breathing and sponsors public peace-building activities. In all we do, The Peace School is dedicated to building world peace, one person at a time.

The Peace School is an independent educational organization and has no political or religious affiliations. The Peace School qualifies under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code making contributions to it tax deductible.

Classes conducted by The Peace School are geared to helping people of all ages and backgrounds bring the energy of peace into their own lives as the first step toward improving their physical and mental capabilities. The Peace School also teaches that every individual has both the ability and the responsibility to contribute to peace on a larger scale. This can be accom-plished in many ways, but always begins with thinking positively and harmoniously, and then incorporating the energy of peace into the words, thoughts and actions expressed throughout normal day-to-day activities. In 1978 The Peace School initiated a large scale activity for peace. At The Peace School's request, September 7 was proclaimed Peace Day by Chicago's mayor, featuring One Minute of Silence for World Peace. Since then, the observance has expanded -- in Chicago and beyond -- into Peace Days, Peace Month, Peace Year and the Decade of Peace.

Following the 1986 International Year of Peace, The Peace School received a special honor from the United Nations. In a ceremony at the U.N.'s headquarters in New York, The Peace School was awarded the Peace Messenger designation for its "significant and concrete contributions" to peace.
